Learn to Sew - Up-cycle a Shirt

This workshop is designed for those who would like to explore their creativity and learn to upcycle garments.  All skill levels are welcome, the focus will be on curiosity, playing with proportions and discovering the joy of repurposing garments.
 
During the course, you will explore how to design and repurpose a mens shirt working with its existing features.  There will be examples available to inspire you as you discover how to finish seams, reuse elements and change the structure with a variety of techniques.  The workshop covers essential ways of working and basic sewing skills that can be applied to other garments and you will leave with an up cycled garment, the skills and confidence to continue repurposing textiles.
 
By the end of the class, you will be able to:
 - Use a sewing machine
 - Understand garment deconstruction and reconstruction
 - Develop creative thinking, design planning
 - Play with garment proportions
 - Reduce Textile waste
 - Trouble shoot common sewing problems

There are 4 sewing machines available to borrow, please contact me directly at heyalimakes@gmail.com to check availability if you would like to reserve one to use on the day.
 
What to Bring
 - Your sewing machine, in good working order (unless borrowing one)
 - If you have any shirts you would specifically like to use, please bring along
 - Packed lunch (a kitchen is available)
 
Accessibility
This workshop will be held in at my countryside home in my light and spacious kitchen at Orchards, Langford Budville, Wellington.  There is plenty of parking on my driveway or in a small carpark opposite.  There are a few steps up to the front door, I'm happy to help carrying your machine if needed.
My two small dogs will be home, after a noisy welcome they will return to their favourite pastime of snoozing!  They can be shut away at request.
 
Cancellations
Life happens, if you need to cancel please let me know at least 7 days in advance, if you can, and you'll receive a full refund.  Cancellations made 3–6 days before will receive a 50% refund or a 75% refund if I can fill your place.  Unfortunately, cancellations within 48 hours can’t be refunded.
If you are unable to make it and would like to transfer your spot to a friend please let me know in advance.
 
If we ever need to cancel a workshop due to low participant uptake, illness or venue issues, you’ll receive a full refund or the option to join a future class.  
Please note that this class needs a minimum of 2 participants to run.
